Wärtsilä wins its third consecutive Best Paper Award at Power-Gen Europe

Wärtsilä received the Best Paper Award in the "Strategy for a Changing Power Sector" category at the Power-Gen Europe 2014 conference in Cologne, Germany last week. The lead author of the article, "Optimal Balancing Products for Cross Border Sharing in Power Systems with High Shares of Renewables", is Wärtsilä's Market Development Director Melle Kruisdijk.
The paper discusses the optimal design of reserve capacity products from both technical and economic perspectives in systems with high shares of wind and solar energy in Europe. Due to increasing intermittent generation, the need for reserve capacity and frequency restoration products increases. The paper shows the system benefits fast-responding reserves can provide, from either spinning or stand-still position. Agile capacity not only secures power supply in systems with high shares of wind and solar but also reduces operational costs. The article is based on a study by DNV GL.
Three other Wärtsilä papers received Highly Commended awards at the conference: "Incentives for Gas-based Cogeneration in Coal-intensive Countries" by lead author Sales Manager Adam Rajewski, "Challenges ahead for Modern CHPs in District Heating Applications" by Sales Director Anders Ahnger and "Grid Connection Verification of Power Generation in a Modern Power System Environment" by General Manager Niklas Wägar.
This year marked the third consecutive Best Paper Award for Wärtsilä at Power-Gen Europe. In 2013, Melle Kruisdijk and General Manager Matti Rautkivi won the award with their article "Future Market Designs for Reliable Electricity Systems in Europe". In 2012, the prize was handed to Niklas Wägar for the article "Smart Power Generation with Flexible Gas Engine Concepts".

Wärtsilä's highlights in Cologne included the launch of the book "Power Supply Challenges - Solutions for Integrating Renewables". 900 hardcover books, many of them signed by the author Jacob Klimstra, were distributed to visitors to the event.
