Solwaybank Wind Farm Application Submitted

Monday, Jun 22, 2009

RES1 is pleased to announce it has submitted plans for Solwaybank2 wind farm, located 8km south west of Langholm, to Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Solwaybank wind farm will have an installed capacity of 42 MW.  Each turbine will be rated at 2MW and have a maximum blade tip height of 126.5m.  The site is in a great location to harness the excellent wind speeds in the area and provide enough clean green power for over 24,500 Scottish households, which is equivalent to 37% of the households in Dumfries and Galloway.

Tom Fewster, Project Manager for Solwaybank, said;

“Scotland has a very ambitious target of generating 50% of its electricity from renewables by 2020, demonstrating its commitment to renewable energy and the economy.  Solwaybank wind farm will make a significant contribution to the target, in addition to bringing benefits on a local level to the economy and the community.  After comprehensive monitoring and surveys of the site we are confident that Solwaybank is very well suited to a wind farm. ”

In line with RES policy, local firms will be used during the construction period ensuring that commercial benefits will be realised locally.  A community fund will also be linked to the wind farm to help support community projects in the surrounding area, and this will be subject to a separate consultation.

The planning application and environmental statement will be considered by Dumfries and Galloway Council, and a decision is expected in 2010.  The Environmental Statement (ES) and planning application are available for viewing at Dumfries and Galloway Council Offices, Lockerbie. Alternative deposits of the ES can be viewed at the Langholm and Lockerbie Town Halls and the Langholm and Lockerbie Libraries. Copies of the ES are also available from RES on request.

RES has created a dedicated website for the project, further information and details can be view at www.solwaybank-windfarm.co.uk. Visitors are also able to provide feedback on the proposal.

2.     The proposed Solwaybank wind farm will consist of 21 turbines, each rated at 2MW capacity and up to 126.5 m in height (to the tip of the blade).  In total installed capacity will be 42 MW and generate enough electricity over the course of the year to power more than 24,500 homes (taking into account natural fluctuations in the wind and the efficiency of the generators).
