RES Submits Planning Application for Llanbrynmair Wind Farm

Wednesday, Apr 15, 2009

RES UK & Ireland Ltd (RES) has submitted an application to build a 43-turbine wind farm between Llyn Gwyddior and Nant yr Eira. The 99MW wind farm site lies on agricultural land between the villages of Llanbrynmair and Llanerfyl in Montgomeryshire, Powys.

Because the wind farm has a capacity greater than 50MW, the application will be submitted to the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC). Powys County Council will be consulted, and members of the public will also be able to make their views known to DECC, who will take their views into account as part of the consultation process.

Each turbine would have an indicative capacity of 2.3MW, and a maximum height to the tip of the blade of 126.5m. The wind farm would generate enough pollution-free electricity a year to meet the annual electrical demand of approximately 57,000 average homes.

The site was chosen because it sits wholly within the area preferred for wind farm developments, designated by Powys County Council and the Welsh Assembly, and because over 3 years’ studies have shown that there are no constraints on the site and the wind farm will have no adverse effects on the environment.

Richard Evans, Project Manager for the Llanbrynmair Wind Farm proposal, commented;

“This is an exciting project because it will generate such significant amounts of electricity, enough to power the equivalent of all of the homes in Powys. We hope that the wind farm will be a real asset locally, not least because it will generate over £200,000 each year for a new community fund, which will be the subject of a separate consultation. We are also working with the RSPB and the Countryside Council for Wales to develop a habitat management plan, which will cover most of the site and will include the restoration of priority bog areas.”

The Environmental Statement and planning application will be available for inspection at the County Council offices in Welshpool and on board the Welshpool and Newtown Mobile Libraries. Copies will also be available for public viewing in Llanerfyl Village hall (Canolfan Bentref Llanerfyl) and Llanbrynmair Community

Centre (Canolfan Cymdeithasol Llanbrynmair).
