AFL Introduces Optical Ground Wire for the Renewables Market

Spartanburg, SC – August 26, 2014 – AFL is adding to its Optical Ground Wire product line by introducing Renewables-Optimized Optical Ground Wire (OPGW), an aerial fiber optic cable designed specifically for the renewables market. The Renewables-Optimized OPGW allows for greater ease and flexibility in installation timelines while providing excellent electrical and mechanical properties.
“Our customers servicing wind and solar projects have expressed a need for efficient OPGW designs and expedient delivery,” stated Jon Potter, aerial cable product line manager for AFL. “AFL’s family of renewables optimized OPGW delivers upon these market requirements.”
Taking advantage of AFL’s CentraCore OPGW features, the cable’s compact and robust design houses 48 single-mode optical fibers in gel-filled, laser-welded, hermetically-sealed stainless steel tubes that protect the vulnerable fibers from environmental stresses and electrical faults. Additionally, thick outer layers of aluminum clad steel wire and aluminum pipe provide excellent crush resistance and enhance fault current rating capability.
