Italy gas-to-energy project to use Jenbacher engine

GE Energy’s Jenbacher gas engine technology has been selected for a sewage gas-to-energy cogeneration project in Italy. Hera Forli-Cesena, one of Italy’s leading utilities, will use gas generated at a wastewater treatment facility in the northern Italian city of Forli to generate electricity and thermal power.

The Forli project being developed by Hera SpA, a leader in environmental, water and energy services, will be one of a handful of sewage gas-to-energy plants of its kind in Italy.

The project is designed to help reduce the treatment facility’s energy costs and will be eligible to participate in Italy’s green certificate trading system which supports the production of renewable energy. During the process, sludge left at the end of the wastewater treatment process is introduced into an anaerobic fermentor which produces biogas. The new Forli cogeneration plant uses a GE Energy’s Jenbacher JMS 208 GS-L.L engine to generate 330 kilowatts per hour of electrical energy and 400 kilowatts per hour of thermal heat to support the wastewater treatment plant’s operations. The engine is similar to the Jenbacher units operating in Hera’s two other sewage gas-to-energy plants.
